5 Reasons Why We Love Rice University.

In Istanbul, Turkey, after a few wrong turns, I found solace on the serene campus of the university. Once, I found myself at the enology school on the Preseco Trail in Italy. After these experiences, I have come to know that universities offer great tourism opportunities. Houston’s Rice University is no exception. Let me tell you 5 reasons why Rice University is a must-see for Houston visitors.

Rice University has amazing history.

William Rice Marsh was the benevolent founder and namesake of the school. He came from the north, but made his fortune in Houston. For this reason, he put most of his fortune in a trust that would be used to start the school when he passed away. Unfortunately for him, he could not trust some of his employees. His personal valet and one of his lawyers murdered him by chloroform to get his fortune. The plot was foiled by a bank teller who noticed a misspelled signature on a forged check. Close friend and lawyer James Baker brought the criminals to justice. And to think, Rice University almost did not exist.

Rice University has beautiful foliage.

Rice campus boasts over 4300 trees on 300 acres of land. After hosting many tours on Rice University, the trees provide much needed cover from the hot, Texas sun. They are conversation pieces themselves hosting other plants and animals and serve as reliable companions in selfies.

Rice University campus is full of surprises.

When you step on campus, you know that Rice is a special place. Then, you find out that not only was William Marsh buried on campus but, there is actually a section of the Berlin Wall on campus. You may have walked past both a few times without even knowing it.

Rice University is home to its own skyspace.

For those of you who don’t know, a skyspace is a structure that is used in the Quaker religion. It is a structure with a large opening in the roof so that you can look up a give honor to God. Twilight Epiphany, a skyspace, was designed by artist James Turrell. Twice a day, at sunrise and sunset, this work of art turns into a LED light show that dazzles students, faculty, and tourists.

Rice University is a great place to view public artworks.

A walk on Rice is never boring. Rice University is the home to many public artwork. My tourists are partial to the James Surls’ sculpture, “Again the Tree, the Knot, the Flower, and Me.” On a night walk, you will be like a moth to the flame when you see the glowing “Mirror” sculpture by Jaume Plensa.

Rice University is conveniently located near the best tourism in Houston.

Rice University is a great starting place for other tourism sites. A simple 3 mile walk on Rice University could turn into a trip to the museum district, a visit to the Houston Zoo, a lounge on the lawn of Miller Outdoor Theatre, or a ride on the light rail.

Whether you live in Clear Lake or the Woodlands, or you are from another country, or you live down the street, Rice University makes for a great destination. Make sure you wear your walking shoes, bring a camera, and enjoy the day.
